In a recently obtained national survey, 21% of adults reported that they were experiencing occurrences where they got angry very quickly and emotionally vocal with loved ones. This census clearly shows how much stress affects our overall mood and behavior.
If you are looking for ways to help alleviate some of that stress, read on to gain value in mentally refreshing yourself after a stressful day. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health.
Meditation is an effective way to handle stress in your daily life. It retrains the brain to relinquish the fight or flight response that often follows stress. Allowing your brain to rest can simplify how the brain processes experiences and feelings. Leading to smoother brain activity towards the end of your day, thus, reducing stress levels.
Meditation can be performed for five minutes or as long as an hour. Even taking a break to meditate sporadically throughout your day can make a big difference for your brain to alleviate tension and get back to healthy thinking patterns. Increasing the amount of time you relax, sleep, and rest your brain can help you emotionally regulate. It makes a big difference in your ability to face new challenges when they show up.
Go on a Mindful Walk
There is real science that backs the benefit of going on walks in order to reduce stress. Movement and working out release endorphins that help your brain reset to positive thinking patterns. But the act of being mindful as you walk allows the brain to focus on a singular word, color or sensation. This allows the overflow of stressful thoughts to decline and for the brain to relax and reset itself.
Most of our adulting has resulted in sitting at a desk all day, and being able to move can help your body regulate hormones. Walking outside also allows you to obtain more Vitamin D—an important vitamin that boosts one’s mood.
Take a Break From Social Media
Social media has many benefits like the ability to connect with almost anyone around the world and has done wonders for many business owners from a marketing aspect. But, it does have its flaws. It can increase stress levels in individuals already experiencing high levels of stress. If we are not careful, we can get stuck in a mode of constant comparison and anxiety through what we are witnessing on social media. Thats why a hot soak in the tub is a great way to detach from those negative feelings.
While others may have different tactics for taking a break, there is something so peaceful and relaxing about soaking in a tub of warm water filled with Epsom salt—resting your eyes and letting your thoughts drift over the sound of Marvin Gaye instrumentals. Warm water soothes aches and pains in the body—especially paired with Epsom salt. It’s also very annoying to use electronics in the bath, hence it being one of the best ways to take a break from social media.
Perform Physical Activities
To mentally refresh after a long stressful day, try taking some time to exercise.
Exercise is hands-down the best natural stress reliever due to your body’s innate response to release endorphins and enhance your mood while working out. The best part is; you don’t have to be doing a crazy HIIT session or lifting a thousand pounds for those endorphins to be released. Whether you prefer to walk, run, lift a thousand pounds, or follow along with your favorite fitness trainer—there are plenty of options for you to choose from to keep you accountable.
Spend Time With Loved Ones
This should be very self-explanatory. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and or stressed out, go spend time with people you hold dear to your heart, and have the highest trust in. Being in the presence of these people can oftentimes make you feel instantly more relaxed and safe. Talk to them about your stressors, if you feel comfortable. Or, just spending quality time can easily get your mind off the things that are weighing you down and allow you some reprieve.
